Lawrence Berk founded the Berklee College of Music as Schillinger House in 1945, the first school in the nation to teach jazz. It enrolls more than 4,000 students from 79 different countries. The school offers majors in composition, contemporary writing and production, electronic production and design, film scoring, jazz composition, music business/management, music education, music production and engineering, music therapy, performance, professional music and songwriting. Berklee graduates have gone on to win Grammy Awards, Academy Awards and Emmy Awards, among other honors.
The Stan Getz Media Center and Library collection has 33,000 recordings, 28,000 books and 23,000 musical scores. Students can participate in the school's 375 musical ensembles and perform at its five venues. Students also have access to 13 fully equipped recording studios, 250 computer-based music workstations, 306 practice rooms and 61 ensemble/lab rooms.
