The Best Dental Schools in the Country

As of May 2010, there are 57 accredited dental schools in the United States. There is no official ranking of dental schools; however, taking into account the schools' emphasis on research, their facilities and their faculties there are a few that stand out.
  1. University of Maryland Dental School

    • Not only is the University of Maryland Dental School the first dental school in the United States, but it also is in a league of its own when it comes to research and facilities. The school focuses heavily on the most recent technological advances and has a center that offers clinical experience in a simulated private practice setting. The faculty is top notch and the school also has its own biomedical science faculty. Acceptance into the program is highly selective, but the University of Maryland Dental School encourages science and non-science majors to apply. Research experience is strongly recommended.

    Harvard School of Dental Medicine

    • The Harvard School of Dental Medicine is located in Boston, Massachusetts and is closely affiliated with the Harvard Medical School. The curriculum is unusual in that medical and dental students take courses together for the first two years. In 1957, the school received a National Institute of Dental Research Training grant that allowed it to add more research training and postdoctoral programs. The dental school attracts top students because of its advanced clinical training, faculty and facilities.

    Dental School at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio

    • The Dental School at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas is one of the youngest dental schools in the nation, but ranks high among all dental schools. The school is committed to research and places a major emphasis on the South Texas community. The dental school is noted for being a leader in oral health research nationally and internationally. According to the dental school, "In November 2004, the independent Center for Science and Technology Studies (CEST) of Switzerland ranked dental schools worldwide based on their published research from 1998 to 2002. The UTHSCSA Dental School ranked 4th overall and 11th worldwide in scientific impact of publications."
