The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing was founded in 1950 and has since merged with several other art schools to become one of the largest music schools in China. CCOM encompasses an area of over 70,000 square yards and its library, with more than 55,000 volumes, is the largest in China. Programs and classes range from elementary to advanced. Most of the school's focus is on classical and orchestral playing and theory, with courses also devoted to traditional Chinese music. Students from CCOM have gone on to receive more than 1,800 prizes at national music competitions and nearly 500 at international ones. The school also has exchange programs with the United States as well as with many other Asian countries.

Founded in 1993, the Beijing Midi School of Music is the longest-running school in China devoted entirely to modern music. The list of genres studied at BMSM include rock, Latin, jazz and even funk, while the courses range from technique to theory. In 2003, BMSM set up a partnership with the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (Technical and Further Education), which allows teachers to travel to Beijing to teach each month. In addition, graduating students from the program receive a degree that is recognized throughout Australia as well as China. BMSM is known by many for its annual rock festival, which it has been putting on since 2000. Most recently, the fest has brought foreign bands from around the world and as many as 80,000 fans during the three-day event.

Also founded in 1993, the Beijing Contemporary Music Institute offers up one of the most rounded music education programs in Beijing. While much of the emphasis is on modern music, such as jazz and folk, there are additionally departments for orchestral and wind instruments. There is also a focus at BCMI on the performance arts, with programs in musicals, dance and vocal training. It is one of the only music schools in Beijing to have its own music recording program, where students can learn to produce and engineer.
