    Berklee College of Music

    • Berklee College of Music in Boston prepares students for careers in music and the music business by having them study and practice contemporary styles of music. The school offers more than a dozen performance and nonperformance degree programs. The school was founded in 1945 and awarded its first honorary doctorate to Duke Ellington.

      In addition to traditional performance studies, Berklee has the unique distinction of offering majors in practical programs not available elsewhere. Berklee was the first undergraduate degree program in Film Scoring and had the first college majors in Music Synthesis and Songwriting. Berklee also includes the genre of hip-hop into its curriculum.

      Only 30 percent of applicants are admitted into the college, making it very competitive. The school offers $26 million in annual merit-based scholarships to help cover its annual tuition of around $30,000 (in 2010).

    Oberlin College and Conservatory

    • Ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 20 liberal arts colleges in 2008, Oberlin College’s Conservatory of Music is unmatched when it comes to teaching facilities and equipment. This, the country’s oldest continuously operating music conservatory, boasts a massive collection of more than 1,500 top-quality instruments, all available for student use. The collection also includes 207 Steinway pianos.

      The 440-acre Ohio campus has five concert halls and 150 practice rooms available to its students. This is an impressive number considering the enrollment is just over 600 students. Many students enter double-degree programs, and all students enjoy personal attention from an impressive 7-to-1 student to faculty ratio. Tuition and fees at Oberlin are approximately $50,000 per year, based on 2010 figures.
