Diesel Mechanic Schools Near Omaha, Nebraska

There are several diesel mechanic schools in Nebraska, primarily offered through the state’s community college system. Near Omaha, there are three schools offering technical automotive training programs, which are certified by the nationally-recognized National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation or NATEF.
  1. Metropolitan Community College

    • Metropolitan Community College is Nebraska’s largest community college, with two campuses in the metro area, which offer several technical programs. The college offers two auto mechanics programs: Auto Collision Technology and Automotive Technology. The Auto Collision Technology program covers basic and advanced metal finishing, major auto body repair and up-to-date auto painting technologies. The Automotive Technology program covers all aspects of automotive technology, with a focus on electronics and computers, as automobiles become increasingly reliant on computer technology.

      Both programs offer Associate in Applied Science Degrees and the Automotive Technology program includes specialist diplomas in Automotive Electronics, Automotive Transmissions and Transaxles and Automotive Brakes and Suspension.

    Omaha Public Schools Career Center

    • Omaha Public Schools offers a NATEF-certified automotive program for sophomore, junior and senior high school students through its Career Center. The Career Center’s Automotive Technology 1-2 introductory course introduces students to the basics of automobile construction and performance, emphasizing hands-on learning. The follow-up course, Automotive Technology 3-4, offers students further experience in an automotive lab setting. Students work on fuel systems, automotive brakes, steering and suspension. Each course is a full year, and offers four credits.

      The Omaha Public Schools Career Center also offers an Auto Collision program, where students receive hands-on training in automotive panel repair and alignment, welding, glass installation and paint refinishing. This program is also a two-part format, each a full-year program of four credits.

    Northeast Community College

    • Northeast Community College is located in Norfolk, Nebraska, about a two-hour drive north of Omaha. Norfolk is a small community of about 23,000 people, according to the latest U.S. Census data, and its Northeast Community College provides an intimate learning environment for students.

      The College offers two Associate in Applied Science Degrees in Auto Body Repair Technology and Automotive Technology. The Automotive Technology program includes theory and lab courses in suspension, steering and brakes, electrical systems, fuel systems and other basics. The program also offers internships with area dealerships and job search and employment classes to assist students in landing jobs after graduation. The College’s Auto Body Repair Technology program includes courses in basic and advanced paint refinishing, welding and general auto body repair.
