McGill is a public university offering over 300 graduate and undergraduate programs including law, medicine, dentistry, education, social work, computer science, architecture, nursing, music and religious studies. Founded in 1821, McGill's 80 acre campus is located at the foot of Mount Royal in downtown Montreal. The university's principal language of instruction is English, but students have the right to submit work in French as well. McGill was named Canada's top university in the annual "Maclean's" rankings from 2004 to 2009.

Loyola College and Sir George Williams University merged in 1974 to form Concordia University in Montreal. There is both a downtown campus and a campus on the west side of the city. Concordia's primary language is English, and the university is recognized as one of Canada's "G15" major engineering schools. In addition to the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, the John Molson School of Business is also prominent and offers both undergraduate programs and MBA and PhD degrees. Other faculties include Arts and Science and Fine Arts.

Universite Laval, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Quebec City, was founded in 1663 and granted a charter by Queen Victoria in 1852. Laval was the first university in North America to offer instruction in French and remains the only North American institution featuring French-language programs in agriculture, forestry, geomatics and actuarial science. This francophone university's 400 graduate and undergraduate programs include agriculture and food sciences, dentistry, education, pharmacy, philosophy, nursing, music, law, medicine and business administration. Students who are not fluent in French can enroll in the "Francais pour non-francophones" program that provides instruction in French as a second language.

This public francophone Montreal university is one of Canada's largest educational institutions and offers over 650 undergraduate and graduate programs. Established in 1878, the university's campus is located on the northern slope of Mount Royal in the city's downtown. The university's size allows it to offer programs in most academic fields while the library holdings include over 2.5 million books, 2 million audiovisual documents and 45,000 periodicals. Universite de Montreal is the only Quebec university to offer a program in veterinary medicine and has an active Faculty of Music that organizes over 500 public events annually.
