Top Colleges in Canada

Some of the top universities in the world are located in Canada. Colleges and universities in Canada vary in reputation according to factors that include selectivity, research funding, internationally recognized degree programs, research emphases and prominent faculty members. The Times Higher Education Supplement published its list of the world's top universities for 2009. Three Canadian universities were listed among the top-40 schools worldwide.
  1. McGill University

    • McGill University was Canada's top-rated university according to the Times Higher Education Rankings; McGill rated 18th overall. Schools are rated according to various criteria including peer reviews, student and staff reviews, scholarly citations and the like. McGill University was the last school on the list to rate higher than a 90 percent (out of a possible 100 percent) when all scores were combined.

      McGill University is located in Montreal, Quebec, and it was founded in 1821. The university now consists of two campuses that are comprised of 11 different major faculty divisions, which include science, religious studies, management, music, medicine, agriculture and environmental sciences, law, dentistry, engineering and education. Research funding for McGill University exceeded $418 million for the 2007-2008 school year. McGill's medical program is one of the best in the nation and is affiliated with eight different teaching hospitals. Nearly 1/4 of the university's research expenditures are funneled through the medical school. McGill enrolls over 34,000 students annually, 6,300 of which are international students.

    University of Toronto

    • Second among Canada's colleges and universities on the Times Higher Education rankings was the University of Toronto. The University of Toronto is internationally known for its top-rated schools of business and law. Founded 1827, Toronto enrolls over 70,000 students on an annual basis and is the largest university in the nation of Canada. The university is located on three separate campuses and also includes the Institute for Aerospace Studies and the Koffler Scientific Reserve, located in Toronto and Jokers Hill, King Township, respectively. The university consists of a college of arts and sciences that is itself composed of seven different major academic divisions. The university has four constituent colleges: Innis College, New College, University College and Woodsworth College. It is also federated with three other colleges: The University of St. Michael's College, The University of Trinity College and Victoria University.

    University of British Columbia

    • Founded in 1908, the University of British Columbia was the third-highest ranking institution on the Times Higher Education list at number 40. The university, located in Vancouver, British Columbia, is internationally recognized for its research and its prominent programs, such as its law school. Its undergraduate degree programs are spread across 23 different faculty divisions, which include social work and family studies, engineering, rehabilitation sciences, the arts, nursing, music, journalism, creative and critical studies, dentistry, education, human kinetics, architecture and landscape architecture, business and computer science, forestry, health and social development, the arts and sciences, science, pharmacy, medicine, law, management and land and food systems.
