Catholic Colleges in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada

With the eighth largest network of Catholic schools in Ontario, Kitchener is home to a vibrant faith-based educational system that comprises about a third of all local schools. While graduates of Kitchener Catholic schools may look for similar experiences in higher education, Kitchener itself has only one Catholic college. St. Jerome's University at the University of Waterloo is the only institution where students can pursue liberal arts higher education while also participating in a Catholic community.
  1. St. Jerome's University

    • St. Jerome's University is a Roman Catholic schoolproviding undergraduate education through its Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Mathematics. St. Jerome's was founded in 1865 as a men's college. Nearly a century later--in 1959--the college was federated into the University of Waterloo, where it now serves both male and female students. Because St.Jerome's is part of the larger University of Waterloo, students who wish to enroll must meet all University of Waterloo admissions requirements. Once enrolled, any student can participate in additional academic programs that are offerered through affiliated colleges. When they complete their course work, they receive their degree from the University of Waterloo.

St. Jerome's commitment to teaching quality is one of its defining features, and all faculty members at St. Jerome's interact directly with undergraduate students. Such a close connection is one of the benefits of the school's comparatively small size. In 2010, St. Jerome's had enrolled about 1,000 full-time and part-time students. The school has its own, separate, library, with reference materials relating to both the liberal arts and math. Such resources include a large Religious Studies collection.

    Resurrection College

    • Students who wish to live on campus can request rooms in Resurrection College, the school's co-ed Catholic residence hall, located on the University of Waterloo campus. The facility originally housed the priests of the Congregation of the Resurrection, who brought their religious movement to Kitchener from France, and founded St. Jerome's. Members of the Congregation of the Resurrection continue to operate Resurrection College in its current role as home to University of Waterloo students looking for a small Catholic residential community. The residential college serves undergraduate and graduate students and has 53 single rooms, with common areas in which students can socialize.

    University Cooperative Education Program

    • The Waterloo Catholic District School Board, the corporate body overseeing the Catholic school system that serves Kitchener, Ontario, has a partnership with St. Jerome's University--and the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University--which is known as the University Cooperative Education Program (UCEP). High school students can enroll in UCEP to earn dual credits at both their high school and St. Jerome's University. Within the program, students may enroll in one university course and may also earn two cooperative education credits by assisting a university professor in a research project. UCEP parfticipants also take two regular 12th grade courses that are taught on the university campus by high school teachers. To apply to the program, students must have an 80 percent grade point average in their high school courses, starting in the 11th grade. To qualify for the program, they also must submit a UCEP application form, with two teacher references, to their high school guidance counselor.
