Alcorn State University, founded in 1871, is located in southern Mississippi on a 1,700-acre campus seven miles west of Lorman. Alcorn State has other campuses at Vicksburg and Natchez. This land grant college offers a variety of courses of study, including nursing, medicine, politics, law, education, human services, business, the arts and agriculture. Alcorn State, a historically black college, has 3,300 students and hosts 40 organizations and clubs. Alcorn offers a student-to-faculty ratio of 16-to-1. U.S. News & World Report ranks Alcorn as one of the best colleges in Mississippi, in 2010.

Jackson State University, founded in 1877, is a historically back Carnegie doctoral/research university. Jackson has six colleges: Science, Engineering and Technology; Public Service; Lifelong Learning; Liberal Arts; Education and Human Development; and Business. The 125-acre campus is located five minutes from downtown Jackson. About 6,500 undergraduate students attend Jackson, with more than 85 percent of them attending full-time. Majors offered at this college include natural resources and conservation, architecture, communication and journalism, Computer and Information, education, engineering, engineering technologies/technicians, foreign languages, literature and linguistics, English language and literature, biological and biomedical sciences, mathematics and statistics, multidisciplinary studies, physical sciences, psychology, security and protective services, public administration and social service professions, social sciences, visual performing arts, health professions, business management and marketing, and history. Mississippi State University, founded in 1878, is both a land grant and sea grant college. Mississippi State, a Carnegie research institution, is the largest university in the state with 17,000 students, 20 percent of which are graduate students. Mississippi State offers a student-to-faculty ratio of just over 15-to-1. There are 78 bachelor's degree programs along with 59 master's programs and 35 doctoral programs.
