The Albany College of Pharmacy in New York is one of a few pharmacy colleges outside a university setting that are nationally ranked. These small colleges focus almost entirely on the pharmaceutical industry and give students specialized training in the field. The Albany College of Pharmacy was ranked in 2008 by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 56 pharmacy program in the nation. The list included both pharmacy colleges and schools of pharmacy located within university systems. Albany College offers a pre-pharmacy program in addition to the graduate pharmacy program leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (D.Pharm) degree. The college is highly regarded because of its additional degree offerings. Students can pursue a pre-professional program such as pre-medicine. Bachelor's degrees are also available in the fields of pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical technology and health and human services. Master of Science degrees are offered in pharmacy administration, health outcomes research and the pharmaceutical sciences. The college also allows students to pursue a Master of Business Administration in conjunction with its pharmacy program.

The St. Louis College of Pharmacy was rated No. 51 in 2008 by U.S. News. The college offers a six-year program in which students complete a pre-pharmacy curriculum and then a PharmD degree. The college also focuses on research with special attention given to aging research and safety in medicine.

The South Carolina College of Pharmacy is the highest rated college of pharmacy not found within a university setting. Ranked No. 42 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, the college offers a Master of Science degree in pharmaceutical sciences along with a Ph.D. The school also offers the PharmD degree. Students have a lot of leeway to pursue joint degrees as well. They can pursue the Ph.D. and PharmD degrees jointly or separately. They can pursue one of those in conjunction with other degrees such as the M.S. or a Master of Business Administration. Ph.D. research areas include medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics and pharmacology, cancer etiology and therapeutics and cell breakdown and regeneration.
