Colleges to Become a Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians work assisting pharmacists, teach in pharmacy technology programs and have the opportunity to continue their education to become pharmacists. They must receive specialized training and have a background free of any criminal record to work with controlled substances. Pharmacy technician training and education varies from certificate and diploma programs to associate degrees and is available at select schools and colleges.

    • College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is a two-year community college with 30,000 students that has been in operation since the 1970's. The college offers a pharmacy technician certificate. Students earn a pharmacy technician certificate by studying five credit hours of pharmacy abbreviations, calculations classes of drugs, physiology, diseases and processing prescriptions. They learn pharmacy technology through hands-on drug compounding and preparation for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board national exam.

    • Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida, is a four-year state college with 170,000 students that has been in operation since the 1960's. The college offers an associate in arts degree in pharmacy. Students earn an associate in arts degree in pharmacy by studying 40 hours of general education courses in communications, humanities, social science, natural science and mathematics and 24 hours of pharmacy and health sciences electives.
