Michigan Colleges With Good Music-Education Programs

It takes hard work and considerable talent to become a music teacher. At the minimum, these educators must complete a bachelor's degree in music education, which requires a comprehensive study of music performance and theory in addition to the college's education requirements. Many Michigan universities have good music education programs offering bachelor's and master's degrees.
  1. Central Michigan University

    • Central Michigan University is near the center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula in Mount Pleasant. This school offers both a bachelor's and a master's degree in music education. The four-year bachelor's program has a focus in instrumental, choral or general music. Students must pass a 300-level jury for admission to the program. The master's program includes a more focused look at music theory, history and research. There are seminars and graduate assistantships offered occasionally, and classes can be during traditional semesters or six-week summer courses. Both the undergraduate and graduate music education programs incorporate a teaching curriculum in addition to music-based courses.
