One exemplary program for the integration of art and computers is the aptly named bachelor of computer science and arts degree at Carnegie Mellon University. The program combines core curriculum in addition to separate courses in computer science and fine arts. Within each of the specified fields, students choose a specific curriculum track. In fine arts, program participants pick from design, art, architecture, music or drama. In computer science, the choices are broader, including computer graphics, computational photography and animation arts.

California Institute of the Arts, or CalArts, offers separate undergraduate and graduate programs in graphic design. Those looking to pursue a career in design education, publication design, typography or web design are encouraged to participate in either program. Classes are based on critique, encouraging both debating and discussing different forms of graphic design. Students, arranged by grade level, work in residency in communal studios to build their portfolios. Specific coursework for undergrads includes a historical survey of graphic design and motion graphics, while graduate students dabble in visual literacy, information design, digital type design and more.
