How to Reference World Wide Web Pages in APA Style Format

APA Style is the list of citation and formatting conventions for writing and publishing put forth by the American Psychological Association. If you do any writing in the field of psychology (and, depending upon publication guidelines, some fields in the social sciences and sciences as well), you will be expected to format your work and cite your sources, including web pages, according to APA Style conventions.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the following information for the website you wish to cite: author name, date of website publication, title of website, website URL address. Also take note of the date on which you accessed the website.

    • 2

Arrange the website information in the following order in your citation with the following punctuation: author last name, author first initial. (year of publication, month and day of publication). Publication title. Retrieved publication month and day, publication year, from URL address (do not put any punctuation after the URL address as readers may falsely assume the punctuation to be part of the URL).

    • 3

If you retrieved the website from a database, the entry would be the same as in Step 2, but you would substitute the name of the database for the URL.

    • 4

If the website lists no individual author, determine the name of the organization that sponsors the website. The website sponsor is sometimes listed at the top of a web page or is in small print at the bottom of a web page. Substitute the name of the organization in the entry for the author name. If you are unable to determine an author or sponsoring organization name, begin your entry with the title of the web page.

    • 5

If you are unable to determine when the website was originally published, put n.d. (for "no date") in parentheses in your entry where the publication date should be.

    • 6

Place your website entry alphabetically in your list of references according to the first letter of the first word in your entry.
