Southern Ohio Colleges

Students have a variety of choices when looking for colleges in southern Ohio as there are both private, smaller schools and large universities. Ohio's southern colleges offer a range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, with some colleges such as Xavier University offering convenient and flex-degree options that allow you to complete your education with weekend-only classes.
  1. University of Cincinnati

    • University of Cincinnati (UC) is a public research university located in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. The college offers 66 undergraduate and 41 graduate degree programs to around 38,000 enrollees each year. Bachelor's degree programs range from accounting and aerospace engineering to entrepreneurship and urban planning. According to its website, several of UC's graduate programs, including the school's music and arts programs as well as science and engineering, have been ranked in the top 50 nationally by the "U.S. News & World Report."

    Xavier University

    • Xavier University is a private Jesuit Catholic university in Cincinnati. The school offers 80 undergraduate programs in business, the arts and sciences, health and social sciences and education. Xavier also offers pre-professional programs in the areas of pre-law, pre-dental, pre-med and pre-veterinary science. Graduate programs include the Masters of Business Administration (MBA), the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) and master's degree programs in education, nursing, human resource development and the arts.

      Xavier enrolls just approximately 4,200 students each year with a student-to-faculty ratio of just 12 to one. Xavier ranks third in a 2010 list of top-10 Midwest universities by the "U.S. News & World Report."

    Miami University

    • Miami University is a public university located in Oxford, Ohio, a small college town of only about 21,000 people. Miami University has a student body of approximately 16,000 enrollees. The college offers more than 100 undergraduate degree programs, more than 50 master's degree programs and several doctoral degrees. Miami's academic divisions include its college of arts and sciences, business school, health and education, engineering and fine arts. Graduate and pre-professional programs include business administration, accountancy, chemistry, psychology and computer science.

      Ohio residents pay a maximum of $11,442 in tuition per year according to the 2009-10 school year. Non-Ohio residents entering Miami University pay $26,202 for tuition. The school offers several satellite branch campuses throughout southern Ohio, including in the cities of Hamilton, Middletown, and West Chester.

    Shawnee State

    • Shawnee State University is located on the edge of the southern Ohio border in the city of Portsmouth. The college occupies 52 acres, which contain 21 buildings, including the college's Advanced Technology Center. Shawnee State offers some of the lowest tuition rates in Ohio, according to its website. The school enrolls around 3,500 students each year.

      Shawnee State offers more than 80 academic programs leading to certificates or associate, bachelor's and master's degrees. Bachelor degree programs include majors in the arts and social sciences, fine arts, the sciences and education. Master's degree programs include education and occupational therapy.
