The capital and most populous city in Georgia, Atlanta plays host to a high concentration of colleges and universities, some of which are among the most competitive in the country.   1. Emory University

    • Emory University began in 1836 as Emory College in the small Georgia city of Oxford. Today a collective of about a dozen undergraduate and graduate colleges and schools make up the leading research university.     • A fixture among U.S. News & World Report's top 10 public universities, the Georgia Institute of Technology easily rates among the top colleges in Atlanta, Georgia.     Clark Atlanta University

    • Clark Atlanta University has a long tradition as one of the country's largest foremost historically black colleges and universities. In 1988, born out of a consolidation of Clark College, founded in 1869, and Atlanta University, established in 1865, today the private, Methodist university features over 600 degree programs across four schools. In addition to comprehensive programs of study in arts and sciences, business, education and social work, CAU students have studied abroad at international higher education institutes on every continent. Several residential housing facilities and a Division II collegiate athletics standing further characterize the university.
