Since 1881, Spelman College has provided higher education to African-American women. The private HBCU for women receives its accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. While Spelman College is a HBCU, it accepts students from all races and nationalities and is ranked as the No. 1 HBCU by "U.S. News & World Report" 2010 college rankings.
Spelman offers 26 majors and 25 minors in its undergraduate program. Students can earn bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degrees. Spelman also has off-campus programs allowing students to continue their education at another college within the United States or in another country.

Howard University began as a theological seminary for African-American clergy in 1866. Howard University's website states that on March 2, 1867, Congress and President Andrew Johnson chartered the university, designating it as "a University for the education of youth in the liberal arts and sciences." In 2010, the university ranked as the second-best HBCU in the "U.S. News & World Report" Best Colleges List.
Howard offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. There are seven undergraduate colleges/schools: Engineering, Architecture & Computer Sciences, Education, Divinity, Dentistry, Communications, Business and Arts, and Sciences. Law, Medicine, Social Work and Pharmacy, Nursing & Allied Health Sciences make up Howard's four graduate programs.

Founded in 1867, Morehouse College, formerly Augusta Institute, ranks as the third-best HBCU on the "U.S. News & World Report" Best Colleges of 2010 list. The all-male private college, according to Morehouse's website, works to develop students' intellect and character. Morehouse also is the only all-male HBCU and emphasizes the African-American experience.
Morehouse offers two undergraduate degrees: the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science. Students can choose from 26 majors offered across three academic divisions of Humanities & Social Sciences, Science & Mathematics and Business Administration & Economics. Along with specific requirements for each academic division, students must have at least a 2.0 grade point average to earn a bachelor's degree.
