A List of the Best Historical Black Colleges

Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are higher education institutions established principally to serve the black community before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Of the over 100 HBCUs still in operation in 2010, U.S. News & World Report, the leading university-ranking magazine, judges the best based upon peer assessment, student retention data, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving rate.
  1. Spelman College

    • Ranked the top HBCU in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2008, Spelman College has been providing a liberal arts education to black women since 1881. Spelman students can also register for undergraduate classes at any of the other participating institutions in the Atlanta consortium of historically black institutions, including Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine. Spelman hosts more than 2,100 students on a 39-acre campus a six-minute drive west of downtown Atlanta. Spelman's top five majors include biology, economics, English, political science and psychology. Students can take advantage of many research programs designed to help make those underrepresented in math and science competitive on the job market. Spelman requires neither a minimum high school grade-point average nor minimum SAT or ACT scores. Admission is competitive, however; as of 2009, those admitted had an average 3.61 high school GPA, an average combined Critical Reading and Math SAT I score of 1,078 and an average ACT score of 23. Home-schooled applicants must take the subject test SAT II subject tests as well as the SAT I or ACT II test to be eligible for consideration.

    Howard University

    • Created in the wake of the Civil War and chartered in 1867 by Congress and President Andrew Johnson, Howard University remains the liberal arts and sciences college they wanted. U.S. News considers it the No. 2 HBCU in the U.S. As of 2009, Howard had just over 7,000 undergraduates pursuing one of 27 degrees with 80 possible majors. Sophomores with 31 completed credit hours in good standing and a 2.0 cumulative GPA can participate in the Consortia & Domestic Exchange Program and spend a semester at one of the universities that Howard has exchange agreements with, including Columbia, Duke and Rutgers universities. Howard has several honors programs in business, communications and the humanities that give students opportunities for scholarships and specialized training. Each program has its own GPA and SAT score application requirements. Admission is highly selective; but Howard encourages applications from socially or economically disadvantaged students. Howard sets no minimum requirements for high school GPA or SAT score; but applicants should have four years of English, three years of mathematics and two years of a laboratory science, social science and foreign language.

    Morehouse College

    • Ranked the third best HBCU by U.S. News, Morehouse College, since its founding in 1867, has offered black men a liberal arts education organized into three divisions: business and economics, humanities and social sciences, and sciences and mathematics. Within those divisions, there are 18 departments, including Economics, English, Physics and Engineering and Sociology. Students with a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and a minimum combined SAT I and II score of 1770 or an ACT score of 27 or more can earn their degree through the Honors Program, which offers smaller class sizes and a Big Brother-Little Brother Mentoring Program. Program students must maintain a 3.0 GPA during their first two years and 3.25 during their junior and senior years. Morehouse sets no minimum GPA or SAT/ACT scores for general admission, but admission is competitive. High school students with GPAs of 3.0 or higher and strong recommendations can apply for Early Admission or Joint Enrollment as a senior if the student is enrolled in a public high school in Atlanta.
