The best pharmaceutical colleges in the United States are those that rank highly in publications like "U.S. News & World Report" for their established reputations in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. These schools are usually recognized as top programs because they offer specialized concentrations in fields such as medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmaceutics. Interdisciplinary concentrations in fields like health policy and management are generally offered as well.

    • The pharmacy program at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) was rated No. 1 in the United States by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2010. The pharmacy school at UCSF has an established reputation for advanced research in the pharmaceutical sciences and quality training programs leading to the standard doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Three tracks are offered within the Pharm.D. program: pharmaceutical care, pharmaceutical science and pharmaceutical health policy and management. Joint degrees offered along with the Pharm.D. include a master of public health (M.P.H.) and a master of science in clinical research (M.S.C.R). Additional research programs are offered at the Ph.D. level, allowing students to receive both the Pharm.D. and the Ph.D. concurrently. Emphases within the Ph.D. program include biophysics, pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacogenomics, chemical biology and chemistry, biological and medical informatics and bioengineering. A number of post-doctoral programs are offered as well.

    University of North Carolina

    • Second only to UCSF, the University of North Carolina's (UNC) School of Pharmacy is highly respected in the academic community. The UNC program also offers both the Pharm.D. track as well as academic research degrees such as the Ph.D. For those entering the field of management in pharmacy and health care, a master of science degree in health system pharmacy is also available. Unlike some top-rated pharmacy programs, the UNC School of Pharmacy does not offer a joint degree track leading to concurrent Pharm.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Students can, however, elect to take courses within the Ph.D. program as part of their Pharm.D. elective curriculum.

    • The No. 3 program on the "U.S. News & World Report" rankings list is the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. Courses offered within the Pharm.D. program at Minnesota are divided among the five major departments within the college: pharmaceutics; pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical science; medicinal chemistry; clinical and experimental pharmacology; and pharmaceutical care and health systems. In addition to the Pharm.D. program, the university offers master's degree and Ph.D. programs in several fields: social and administrative pharmacy (M.S, Ph.D.); pharmaceutics (Ph.D.); experimental and clinical pharmacy (M.S., Ph.D.); and a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry. A joint degree program is also offered in conjunction with the university's business school allowing students to receive the master of business administration (M.B.A.) in conjunction with the Pharm.D.
