The Best Colleges of Music & Art

There are a limited number of prominent colleges throughout the nation that are considered as having the best programs for either studying music or studying art. Even fewer colleges have highly rated programs in both areas. There are no "official" ratings for music programs. The programs that are considered the best in each field are those with an established reputation and a variety of degree options. However, U.S. News & World Report ranked the top art programs in 2008.
  1. The Juilliard School

    • The Juilliard School in New York has long been recognized as one of the top schools in the nation for the performing arts. Its music program is world-renowned for its production of professional musicians in all fields of study. Juilliard's dance and drama programs are among the best in the nation as well. Founded in 1905, Juilliard offers programs of study for preparatory students as well as for college students. Undergraduate degrees offered at Juilliard are in the fields of piano, composition, jazz studies, voice, guitar, orchestral instruments, harpsichord, and organ. At the Master's Degree level, Juilliard offers studies in conducting, collaborative piano, and composition, among others.

    Oberlin College & Observatory

    • Oberlin College & Conservatory is also considered as one of the best schools in the nation for music but, unlike Juilliard, as part of a larger college system, Oberlin College does have a fairly established art department. Students studying at Oberlin Conservatory are encouraged to pursue joint degrees, one in music and one outside of the music department. This makes Oberlin a logical choice for students pursuing studies in both music and art. Oberlin's music program offers both Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in the field with concentration in many different instrumental areas as well as in music history, opera, and music education. The college offers studies in art at the undergraduate degree level in three primary areas: studio art, art history, and visual art. Students can also minor in art.

    Yale University

    • Yale University was ranked second in 2008 by U.S. News & World Report for its program in the fine arts. It ranked only behind the Rhode Island School of Design, which has no music program. At Yale, musical arts remain an important part of the college despite the fact that they are somewhat overshadowed by its art program. Yale offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in art with four primary areas of emphasis: photography, printmaking and printing, graphic design, and sculpture. The Yale music program offers the Bachelor of Arts degree along with the Master of Music, Master of Musical Arts, and the Doctor of Musical Arts. Instruction is given in nearly every instrumental field along with music history and theory.

    Rhode Island School of Design

    • The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) was ranked as the nation's top art program (U.S. News & World Report 2008). Like Juilliard, which offers only music programs, the RISD offers only programs in the field of art. The school offers 16 different undergraduate art majors in various fields such as sculpture, illustration, and graphic design. Graduate degrees are also offered in these fields and many others such as art history, interior architecture, and industrial design.
