The Juilliard School is a performing arts conservatory that was founded in 1905. The Juilliard School Music Division offers programs in performance, composition and conducting. Undergraduates work toward the Bachelor of Music degree in one of eight fields, including composition, orchestral instruments, piano, voice, harpsichord, guitar, organ and jazz studies. Undergraduates can also enter a three-year program leading toward a professional diploma in one of eight fields. Graduate students at Juilliard can work toward a Master of Music degree in one of 11 fields, a graduate diploma in one of 11 fields or an artist diploma in one of four fields. The school also offers a Doctor of Musical Arts degree program in eight areas of specialization. All Juilliard students have the opportunity to perform in orchestras and jazz and chamber music ensembles. Notable alumni of the Juilliard Music Division include cellist Yo Yo Ma, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and violinist Itzhak Perlman.

Admission to Curtis has become highly competitive; as of 2009, the school had only 165 students. Undergraduates at Curtis work toward the Bachelor of Music degree with majors in composition, conducting, keyboard, orchestral instruments or voice. The Curtis Institute also offers programs leading toward professional diplomas and certificates, as well as a Master of Music degree program in opera. All Curtis students have the opportunity to perform with the school's symphony and chamber orchestras. Students are required to perform in the Student Recital Series. Notable Curtis alumni include composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, opera singer Margaret Harshaw, and conductor Alan Gilbert, who became director of the New York Philarmonic in 2009.

Indiana University established the Jacobs School of Music in 1921. The school contains undergraduate and graduate programs and offers professional music education within the context of a research university. Undergraduates can work toward the professional Bachelor of Music degree with a major in composition, early music, jazz studies or performance. Performance majors can specialize in one of 20 instruments. The Jacobs School also offers Bachelor of Music Education and Bachelor of Science degree programs. Graduate students can work toward a Master of Arts degree in musicology or a Master of Music in composition, conducting, early music, jazz studies, music theory, sacred music or performance.
