SUNY Stony Brook offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music that covers topics in musical theory, performance, history of Western music and composition. In order to gain acceptance into the program, applicants need to pass a two-part written and oral exam. Prospective students also must audition through a vocal or instrumentation performance. In addition to taking classes, students also receive private individual lessons from faculty members. Minors are also available at the undergraduate level in classical music, Jazz, and music and technology.
The Department of Music at SUNY Stony Brook offers music degrees at the master's and doctoral level in the history and theory of music, composition and performance. The performance track offers students an opportunity to focus in voice, piano, guitar, percussion, violin, trumpet, clarinet and more. Students take courses and seminars in computer music, orchestration, music analysis, tonal analysis and Mozart's operas. Applicants to the graduate program must have a bachelor's degree in a music-related area; audition; and submit essays, Graduate Record Exam scores and letters of recommendation.
Students enrolled in the music degree programs at SUNY Stony Brook have an opportunity to perform in concerts, ensembles and recitals. Students can participate in the orchestra, wind ensemble, choral ensemble and string quartet. Over 300 student recitals are performed throughout the year. All recitals are free and open to the public. Additional opportunities are available in opera, Jazz, and electronic and computer music. Musical events occur throughout the year at the Stallar Center on campus.
Numerous music programs are available for children, teenagers and adults throughout the Stony Brook area. The children's music program is available for students up to fifth grade and educates them through music games and exercises. Opportunities are also available for them to develop vocal skills, site read music and play instruments. The middle school and high school program offers classes and private lessons in voice, composition, Jazz and music theory. Adults have opportunities to participate in sessions in order to prepare for a concert in the Stellar Center.
