UC Berkeley is the oldest of the California university system. It boasts of numerous world-renowned Nobel laureates. It offers more than 350 degree programs in its 14 schools and colleges. UC Berkeley has numerous research programs and a special research office. It brings music, dance and theatre programs from around the world. Founded in 1880, the University of Southern California is noted as one of the world's leading private research universities. It is located in the heart of Los Angeles adjacent to Exposition Park. Caltech in Pasadena boasts 3l Nobel Prize recipients since the prizes were first given in 1923. There are presently five winners on its faculty. Originally a men's school, it became coed in 1970. It is known for its research facilities and has mainly science and engineering courses. In conjunction with UC Berkeley and the University of Hawaii, it operates the W.M. Kerk Observatory at Mauna Kea, Hawaii which houses the largest reflecting telescope in the world. It is affiliated with the National Aeronautical and Space Administration as well as several laboratories. Ranked fourth in 2008, Caltech had a population of 2,126 in that year.

UC San Diego is located along the Pacific Ocean near La Jolla. It is one of the newer universities, founded in 1959. It has six schools for undergraduates. Graduate and professional schools include the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and School of Medicine. It had a population of 27,520 in 2008 and was ranked 35th that year.
