Anne Arundel Community College is located in Arnold, Maryland. AACC offers a full-time, 25-month physician assistant program that prepares students to become certified physician assistants. This program is comprised of lecture, laboratory and clinical learning. Although the physician assistant program at AACC provides students with a certificate in physician assistant studies, students are able to also earn their master's degree in PA studies through a partnership with Saint Francis University, which occurs during the second year of studies. In order to receive an interview with the program director, you need a bachelor's degree, five prerequisite courses in biological sciences, chemistry and psychology, as well as a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. Though not required, the school suggests that applicants have approximately 1,400 hours of patient care experience. Towson University-CCBC Essex is located in Baltimore, Maryland. Towson University-CCBC Essex offers a 26-month, 96-credit physician assistant program. This is a graduate program that provides students with a master's degree in physician assistant studies, as well as allows students to sit for the national exam upon successful completion of the program. Students in the program take classes in ethics of PA practice, anatomy, pediatrics, pharmacology, psychosocial issues and research, among others. Students must also complete clinical courses in pediatrics, family medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, as well as community medicine and a final rotation in the student's specialty of choice. To qualify for the program, you need a bachelor's degree, a minimum GPA of 3.00, a minimum of 700 hours of patient contact experience and 5 different prerequisite math and science courses. University of Maryland Eastern Shore is located in Princess Anne, Maryland. UMES offers a full-time, 24-month PA program that consists of 83 credits in anatomy, pharmacology, nutrition, health ethics law, physical diagnosis and clinicals. Students must take nine clinical courses in various specialties, from surgery to pediatrics. To gain acceptance into the PA program offered at UMES, you need to have at least a 3.00 GPA, a 3 to 5 page autobiography and 3 letters of recommendation. Patient care experience is not required, though it is helpful. Students that successfully complete the program are awarded a bachelor degree in physician assistant studies and can sit for the national exam to become certified. Financial aid is available.
