The respiratory care practitioner degree at Pueblo Community College is five semesters long, and a class of 25 students starts each fall. Students are chosen through a selective admissions process that includes an interview, math and aptitude exam and requisite class grades. Selected students must pass a drug screening, background check and have CPR certification for the program. The program at PCC includes theory, laboratory and clinical internships for hands-on experience.

The 21-month program at Pickens Technical College starts with the prerequisite classes of anatomy and physiology and medical terminology, which students must pass with a 2.75 GPA or better. Other requirements for the program include a high school diploma or GED, the physical ability to push and pull objects, lift 25 pounds and hearing to distinguish different breathing sounds. Upon completion of the program students are eligible to take the Certified Respiratory Therapist Exam and Registered Respiratory Therapist Exam.

The respiratory therapist program at PIMA includes general education classes along with core classes in a 21-month-long program. PIMA teaches specialized care techniques including neonatal care, adult special care and patient assessment. One course in the program focuses on preparing for an RT job, and the school assists graduated students with job placement.
