Universities That Offer a Master's Program in Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is referred to as physical therapy in the United States. It is a process consisting of exercise, massage and chiropractic methods used to treat patients within hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and private practice. This process relieves patients of pain and other health problems associated with injury or illness. A minimum of a master's degree is required to practice physiotherapy in the United States. Universities throughout the country offer master's degrees in physical therapy.

    • The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Institute of Health Professions in Boston is a graduate school offering degrees and certificate programs solely in the field of health care. The institute was tied for seventh place in U.S. News and World Report's list of top physical therapy schools at the graduate level in 2008. The Department of Physical Therapy offers three degree programs including a master's degree in physical therapy designed for international students who are licensed physiotherapy practitioners in another country. Concentration options are available in orthopedic, neurologic or geriatric physical therapy. Clinical practice is conducted within world-renowned health care facilities such as Brigham and Women's Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in addition to Massachusetts General Hospital.

    • The University of Tennessee (UT) is composed of campuses in five locations including the UT Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis. The master's degree program in physical therapy is a post-professional advanced study program offered on a part-time or full-time basis. Students complete coursework, a thesis or research project, a practicum and a clinical concentration in either neurological sciences or musculoskeletal sciences. The program is designed for licensed physical therapists seeking career opportunities beyond the entry-level or expertise in clinical research, practice, administration or teaching.

    • California State University (CSU) in Fresno is part of one of the largest systems of higher learning worldwide, consisting of 23 campuses. According to the school's website, 96 percent of faculty members have attained doctoral or other terminal degrees in their fields. The Department of Physical Therapy offers three degrees, including a master's degree preparing students for entry-level positions and licensure in all 50 states. The program is two years in length for students with a bachelor's degree in the field and includes a required nine-week post-graduate internship. The department also offers the degree with an additional one-year joint doctoral degree option in physical therapy.
