Amherst College founded its department of Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, commonly referred to as LJST, in 1992. Amherst students can work toward a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with a major in Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought. To complete the major, students must take at least 11 courses in the department, including required courses such as the social organization of law and legal theory. The department offers courses in five primary areas, including legal theory, interpretive practices, legal institutions, historical perspectives and cross-cultural perspectives. Students who elect to work for departmental honors must complete a written thesis in their senior year. In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked Amherst College second among the nation's liberal arts colleges.
