Undergraduate University Degrees

Undergraduate programs at colleges and universities are four-year programs that award a bachelor's degree upon their successful completion. These degrees encompass a number of different areas of studies, such as liberal arts and engineering. Within each degree, students can pick a major or concentration, such as government, civil engineering, historical architecture or photography, that help to focus their studies in their particular field of interest.
  1. Bachelor of Arts

    • Many liberal arts colleges offer a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, literature, English and other languages. Students are required to take a number of general education requirements in addition to their major focus classes. One advantage of this type of degree is that it provides a wide liberal arts education that can help prepare graduates for a diverse array of jobs.

    Bachelor of Science

    • Students majoring in a mathematics or science field can pursue a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree at a university. As opposed to a B.A. degree curriculum, a B.S. allows students to focus more on their area of interest than general education requirements. B.S. degree programs may also require a minor concentration to further refine their focus.

    Bachelor of Engineering

    • Engineering schools at universities offer Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degrees in a number of areas of engineering, such as civil, aerospace, mechanical, biomedical and environmental. The degree is sometimes also known as a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.). These degree programs prepare students for a wide array of specialized engineering fields.

    Bachelor of Journalism

    • Schools of Journalism, such as the one at the University of Missouri, offer a Bachelor of Journalism (B.J.) in journalism media forms as diverse as magazines, newspapers, television and radio. Missouri's Journalism program offers majors in reporting, publishing, editing and digital media work.

    Bachelor of Architecture

    • The Bachelor of Architecture degree is taught in architecture schools at major universities. The program typically takes five years to complete. Course loads for this degree require classes in art, history, design and math as well as specific architecture classes, and may require an internship or major senior project. To practice in the architecture field, students must complete not only the degree, but also a certification that licenses them in a state.

    Bachelor of Fine Arts

    • Students can receive art degrees in either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts program, but Bachelor of Fine Arts students take more studio art courses than general education programs, focusing their studies on art theory, design and practice. Bachelor of Fine Arts programs allow students to major in several different forms of art, such as painting, digital media, photography and sculpting.
