Psychology Undergraduate Degrees

Undergraduate degrees in psychology vary by institution. Some psychology departments offer the Bachelor of Science degree whereas others offer the Bachelor of Arts degree. In either case, an undergraduate degree in psychology most often prepares individuals for careers in research, psychology, medicine, and the pursuit of advanced degrees in the field.
  1. Stanford University

    • Stanford University offers a Bachelor of Arts degree for undergraduates. The U.S. News & World Report cites Stanford's Department of Psychology as one of the best in the nation. Stanford's degree in psychology allows students considerable leeway in choosing their path to the degree. Much of the general education curriculum emphasizes fields of study in the liberal arts, including courses such as philosophy, religion, history, sociology, and English. Psychology courses place an emphasis on topics such as health and development, neuroscience, abnormal psychology, social psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

    University of Pennsylvania

    • The University of Pennsylvania (Penn) provides a bachelor's degree with honors program in the psychology field. The primary difference between traditional B.S. and B.A. degrees and the honors programs can be seen in the additional components required as part of the honors programs. Penn's program requires students to engage in independent research over two semesters, which culminates in a substantial research paper. Students are also required to take an additional honors seminar as part of the program. Students are introduced to more advanced theory in the psychology field and are given a trial run for graduate school. Students who complete the honors program receive the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with honors.
