Europe's top engineering school and top university is the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Engineering is integral to education at Cambridge much in the same way that it is at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. In both instances, the engineering department is the largest of the university departments, and because of the interdisciplinary nature of education at these institutions, it affects the entire curriculum of the school. The engineering department is divided into six major areas of study: electrical engineering, fluid mechanics and turbomachinery, information engineering, manufacturing and management, civil and environmental engineering, and materials and design. Cambridge helps to lead the way in the field of engineering research. The engineering department houses five different major research centers to this end.
