Paralegals, also known as legal assistants, help lawyers prepare for meetings, trials and hearings by researching information, preparing correspondence and handling administrative tasks. Of the nation's more than 1,000 paralegal training and certification programs, the American Bar Association approves a little more than 250 across the U.S. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, paralegals earned a median annual salary in 2008 of $46,120 with a 26 percent job growth projected through 2018.

    • The Legal Studies and Criminal Justice department at St. John's University offers three legal studies programs approved by the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE): a 21-credit certificate, a two-year associate degree and a four-year bachelor's degree. The school offers more than 80 internship opportunities in the New York-New Jersey area where students gain on-the-job training.

    Skagit Valley College

    • Skagit Valley College offers three courses of study in the Paralegal Department. An associate of arts in paralegal studies combines classroom lecture with internships in law offices to prepare graduates for an entry-level law assistant career. Students who have an associate or bachelor's degree in another field can pursue the certificate in paralegal studies. Working paralegals will find continuing education courses to improve their job knowledge, performance and marketability.

    Athens Technical College

    • The associate degree in paralegal studies at Athens Technical College consists of 123 credit hours that students can complete in two years with full-time attendance. Courses in the major include law and ethics, researching, writing, wills and trusts, civil litigation and law, family, real estate, criminal, and tort. Students complete a 12 credit hour paralegal internship as part of the program. The Student Paralegal Association (SPA) gives students extracurricular opportunities for networking and learning while pursuing their degree.

    Fullerton College

    • Fullerton College offers an associate of science degree in paralegal studies that consists of 27 major-specific credit hours, which a student may take following completion of the college's core curriculum. Students with an associate, bachelor's or master's degree in another discipline may pursue a 30 credit hour certificate in paralegal studies. Students learn legal terminology, law office procedure and specifics related to various branches of the legal system. A paralegal internship and a course in computer assisted research give students hands-on experience. Fullerton College, the oldest community college in the state of California, opened in 1913 and has an enrollment of 20,000 students.
