British Art Schools

A number of art schools reside in Britain, each typically focusing on a specific area. Most are part of larger universities. Some offer both undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, while others only offer postgraduate courses. They vary in size and prestige.
  1. University of the Arts London

    • The University of the Arts is the biggest art school in Britain, teaching over 20,000 students at its six colleges: London College of Communication, Wimbledon College of Art, Chelsea College of Arts, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Camberwell College of Art and London College of Fashion. Across the colleges, a huge variety of courses are available, including degrees in sports journalism and fashion design. Combined, the University has more than 1,200 teaching staff.

    Glasgow School of Art

    • Part the University of Glasgow, the Glasgow School of Art, is a small, specialist school highly involved in research. It was founded in 1845 and has one of the lowest student drop-out rates in the U.K. at 1.8 percent, as of 2011. It offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in interior design, fine art, photography and architecture.

    Winchester School of Art

    • The Winchester School of Art is part of Southampton University. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities spanning the spectrum of painting, printmaking, sculpture, fashion, advertising design and photography.

    Royal College of Art

    • The Royal College of Art is a wholly postgraduate university based in London. Courses are taught by artists, practitioners and theorists. Students have the opportunity to study art in a design environment. Its alumni include Sir James Dyson, Thomas Heatherwick, David Hockney and Sir Ridley Scott.

    Leeds College of Art

    • Located in Leeds, the Leeds College of Art was formed in 1846. It's part of the largest university in the U.K., the University of Leeds. It offers courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as short courses to the general public.
