Michigan Art Schools

The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth predicts that the demand for fine artists in the state of Michigan will increase by less than 3 percent from 2008 through 2018, making competition high for openings. A well-developed portfolio created while attending a post-secondary program can help increase an artist's chances of finding employment in the field. The state of Michigan serves as home to a number of colleges that offer art degree programs, including some that are among the top-ranked fine arts schools in the United States.
  1. Cranbrook Academy of Art

    • Located in Bloomfield Hills, the Cranbrook Academy of Art is affiliated with the Cranbrook Arts Museum. The college is ranked fourth in the United States among all fine arts schools in the "U.S. News and World Report" rankings of 2008. The school only grants Master of Fine Arts degrees; no undergraduate programs are available. Areas of specialization offered at the school include two and three-dimensional design, ceramics, fibers, metal-smithing, painting, photography, print media and sculpture. Each year, the college hosts at least one professional artist-in-residence in each department to teach courses and hold workshops. Art history and studio classes visit the Cranbrook Museum frequently to see examples of concepts discussed in class.
