Michigan Cooking Schools

According to the comprehensive list of Michigan cooking schools compiled by Chef2Chef, community colleges are the best option for culinary degrees in the state. Four-year universities tend to offer food degrees in conjunction with hospitality management or nutrition, without an emphasis on cooking.
  1. Oakland Community College

    • The Culinary Studies Institute at Oakland Community College, located in Bloomfield Hills, offers degrees in Culinary Arts, Restaurant Management and Hotel/Motel Management. The college also offers a certificate in Baking and Pastry Arts. The Culinary Arts program ends with an Associate in Applied Science degree. The 73-credit-hour program prepares students for future employment in restaurants, including the position of executive chef. The first year of the program teaches basic skills and techniques in cooking, baking and serving guests. The second year expands on this knowledge with advanced cuisine and pastry practice and a deeper look at the managerial role in a restaurant.

    Northwestern Michigan College

    • Northwestern Michigan College, a community college in Traverse City, offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Culinary Arts. The school's Great Lakes Culinary Institute facility features four culinary laboratory classrooms, comprised of learning centers such as a bakery, introduction and advanced kitchens, a beverage management station and a training restaurant that seats 90. The program requires a minimum of 72 credit hours, comprised of 16 to 18 credits in general education courses and 56 credit hours in core culinary courses. Core courses include Introduction to Baking, Menu Planning and World Cuisine.

    Grand Rapids Community College

    • The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at Grand Rapids Community College offers a 72 credit associate degree in Culinary Arts that allows students to practice in an on-campus restaurant, The Heritage. The practice labs at the college focus on subjects such as dining room service, catering techniques, nutrition, food preparation, baking and sanitation. Students are expected to bring knife sets and uniforms to class as they will not be provided.

    Henry Ford Community College

    • Henry Ford Community College, in Dearborn, offers an associate degree in Culinary Arts that may be expanded upon, through a joint education agreement, with continued studies at Eastern Michigan University or Madonna University, leading to a bachelor's degree. The college's 66-credit program includes the standard cuisine, baking and management courses. Additional courses include Wines of the World, Major Wine Grape Varieties and Hotel and Restaurant Desserts.
