Sports Business & MBA Programs

Sports businesses encompass several academic and corporate spheres, among them sports psychology, sports marketing, community relations, corporate finance and organizational management. Sports business professionals are employed in a variety of roles. Many are executives in professional or collegiate level sports organizations; agents to professional athletes or high-level athletic coaches or team managers. Numerous institutions of higher learning in the U.S. offer Master's of Business Administration degree programs with a concentration on sports business.

    • Columbia University's Master of Science program in Sports Management is designed to prepare graduates for advanced roles through the professional sports industry with industry-specific coursework and an extensive internship program. Core curriculum is based on an examination of the social and culture history of sports in the United States, followed by sequences in sports finance, marketing, media and public relations. The program concludes with a design and implementation of a industry specific project within a sports organization during a semester long internship.

    University of Oregon

    • The University of Oregon's sports business MBA track has been recognized by Sports Illusrated as the nation's best sports business graduate program. Students who have successfully completed the program have gone on to positions in the National Football League, National Basketball Association and the sports video game developer EA Sports. Instruction takes place at the James H. Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. The first year is comprised of foundational topics in sports business and core MBA electives. The program's second half consists of an industry-based internship and independent study project.
