New Jersey Private Colleges

The State of New Jersey Commission on Higher Education recognizes a total of 63 colleges and universities within the state. Among these, slightly more than half are private institutions. These schools tend to be smaller, more expensive and more selective than public colleges, but many are recognized for high academic standards.
  1. Princeton University

    • One of the eight prestigious "Ivy League" universities, this historic institution is known worldwide for its advancements in research and its encouragement of the arts. Focused mainly on the social and natural sciences and humanities, Princeton offers a wide array of graduate and undergraduate degrees in fields including architecture, sociology and economics, while specific schools of business and education are absent. Princeton also employs a large faculty for a school of its size, with an average enrollment of 5000 and a student/teacher ratio of 5:1.

    Bloomfield College

    • Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church USA, this small school outside New York City was founded in the 19th century as a seminary to train German-speaking ministers. It eventually evolved into a four-year liberal arts college. With an enrollment of about 2,000 students, Bloomfield is an accredited undergraduate school, offering bachelor's degrees in fields including business, education, political science, biology, religion and e-commerce. Currently ,the only graduate degree offered at Bloomfield is a Master of Accounting.

    Monmouth University

    • Located along the Atlantic seaboard about a mile from the ocean, this school has an enrollment of about 6,000 and offers 33 degree programs from eight different schools. Fields of study include management, accounting, psychology and music. Numerous master's degrees are currently offered, but no doctorates.

    Seton Hall University

    • The oldest Catholic university in the U.S., Seton Hall is a larger private school located not far from New York City. An enrollment of about 10,000 students study in over sixty majors, including business, nursing, theology, law, history and journalism. In addition to bachelor's degrees, the school offers dozens of master's degrees and sixteen doctorates.
