Private Colleges in Chicago

Chicago, Illinois, is an ideal place for students who want to live the city life but prefer a more intimate setting for college than a large state university can provide. Whether you want to live on the north side or south side --- depending on your grades and test scores, of course --- you will have your pick of private colleges in the Windy City.
  1. North Park University

    • North Park University is located in Chicago's North Park neighborhood on the northwest side. About 3,200 students attend the school that was founded in 1891 by the Evangelical Christian Church. Located a few blocks' walk off the CTA's final stop on the Brown Line, the school and its students are connected to downtown Chicago by the El or by bus transportation, making a commute to North Park relatively easy.

    Loyola University Chicago

    • Loyola University Chicago is also located on Chicago's far north side, but its campus is located along the shore of Lake Michigan in the city's Roger's Park neighborhood. The private school boasts about 15,000 students, with 71 undergraduate majors and 71 minors, and it is the nation's largest Jesuit college. The school is easy to get to using the city's public transportation system, either by CTA bus or by taking the Red Line, which drops you off at the school's own stop. The Red Line also connects students to Loyola's Water Tower campus, which is off the Chicago stop steps from Michigan Avenue.

    DePaul University

    • DePaul University is on the north side of Chicago in the city's upscale Lincoln Park neighborhood. Located off the Fullerton stop on the CTA's Brown and Red lines, the school is easy to commute to. While the school has 25,000 students, making it one of the largest private schools in the United States, it has a student-faculty ratio of only 17:1. There are about 275 undergraduate and graduate programs of study, and the school has six campuses throughout Chicago and the nearby suburbs.

    University of Chicago

    • The University of Chicago is an elite, private institution on the city's south side in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The school has many claims to fame, not the least of which are numerous Nobel laureates and once upon a time, President Barack Obama taught law classes there. The school has about 5,000 undergraduates and about 10,000 graduate, professional and other students. While the El doesn't run near campus, the Hyde Park area is served by CTA buses and the Metra commuter line. It is also easily accessed by car via Lake Shore Drive.
