Top Pre Dental Programs

Dentists are much maligned by people who are afraid of them, but they perform a necessary job of keeping our teeth and mouths healthy. Potential dentists have a choice of 57 accredited dental schools in the United States. Some colleges offer pre-dentistry programs that emphasize science courses, though prospective dentists can major in any subject. The Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that most dentists are solo practitioners; experienced dentists can earn upwards of $150,000 annually.
  1. Marquette University

    • Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was established in 1881 by the Jesuit order of Catholic priests. Marquette has a dental school, though it does not offer pre-dentistry as a major. The school suggests undergraduate students headed for dental school take two semesters each of chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics and English composition. Marquette says most of its pre-dental students major in such areas as biological science, chemistry, biomedical engineering and physiological sciences. These courses prepare students to take the Dental Admissions Test which dental schools require prior to admission.

Its Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry offers an accelerated program for students wanting to become dentists. The educational process is normally four years of undergraduate studies and four years of dental school. The school offers five-, six- and seven-year study programs. The five-year program is for incoming freshmen only; students take two years of prescribed courses and then may apply to a three-year program at the dentistry school.

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    • Virginia Commonwealth University started out as the Medical College of Virginia in 1836. At one time it was the Richmond campus for the College of William and Mary, but separated from that school in 1962.

The university offers a pre-dentistry program in the College of Humanities and Sciences, but says attending it does not guarantee admission to its dental school. Virginia Commonwealth recommends that pre-dentistry students take courses in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, math, physics, biochemistry and English, which are required for its dentistry school. It also recommends taking courses in behavioral sciences and psychomotor skills.
