Top Colleges for Drama

A college theater program lets you hone your dramatic skills before you head out into the professional world. A theater program also allows you to meet like-minded actors, directors, playwrights and technical designers. Although there is no official ranking of theater programs, the "Princeton Review" lists which colleges and universities have the best college theater. Several schools in the country are known for theater programs and their talented alums.
  1. The Juilliard School

    • The Juilliard School is known for its training in music, dance, and drama. Alumni include Kevin Spacey, Christine Baranski, Robin Williams and many others. Juilliard's location in New York City makes it optimal for students who wish to immerse themselves in the world of Broadway and off-Broadway theater. The program is selective, with about 1,000 candidates auditioning each year for 18 spots in the freshman class.

    Yale School of Drama

    • Of all the Ivy League schools, Yale earns the most praise for its theater program. On the "Princeton Review" list of best college theaters, Yale ranks No. 2 in the nation. The Yale School of Drama offers a Master of Fine Art and a Doctor of Fine Art degree, but no bachelor's degree. Students can study acting, design, technical design, directing, dramatic criticism,stage management and theater management Students also can work with the Yale Repertory Theatre, a Tony Award-winning company.

    Drew University

    • "Princeton Review" ranks Drew University No. 1 in the nation for best college theater. Unlike the other schools on this list, which are conservatories where studies focus solely on drama, Drew students study theater in the context of a liberal arts education. The school's website notes that "courses in other arts, literature, the natural and social sciences, and humanities all can contribute to the cultivation of an artist with a rich understanding of human nature, the theatre and its role in the world." Drew offers internships with the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and the Bickford Theatre. Students can study in London for a semester, where they can attend performances at the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
