Virginia College Mobile offers diploma programs for surgical technologist and surgical technology. Seventy-two credit hours are required to complete the surgical technologist program. Classes include body structures, organs and systems, pathophysiology, surgical instrumentation and equipment, and medical terminology, law and ethics. Students learn outside the classroom during clinical training and externships. Students may also pursue an associate of science degree in surgical technology. This program requires 96 credit hours to complete, including 24 credit hours of general education courses in math, humanities and social and behavioral sciences. Degree coursework includes aseptic technique, introduction to the surgical environment, general and specialized surgical procedures, and pharmacology, microbiology and patient care for the surgical technologist.

Presentation College Fairmont offers a one-year certificate program in surgical technology. Coursework includes microbiology, surgical procedures and biomedical science for surgical technologists. The college also offers an associate of science degree for surgical technology. It requires 61 credit hours for completion. Coursework is similar to that of the certificate program but degree candidates must also complete general education classes in math, technology, composition and social science.

Southeast Technical Institute offers a diploma program in surgical technology. Students will complete 51 credit hours of coursework during three semesters to graduate. Classes include applied anatomy and physiology, health care and human relations, patient care and surgical techniques, surgical asepsis, responsibilities of the surgical technologist and surgical procedures. Many of these classes will also include a lab component. Students admitted to the program must submit to a background check and drug testing.

Mt. Hood Community College offers an associate of applied science degree program for surgical technology. It takes six quarter terms to complete. Students are given classroom instruction and clinical application in local hospitals. Classes include medical language for health care settings, two classes in human anatomy and physiology, nine courses in surgical technology theory and three in surgical technology clinical practice. Before graduating, students take the National Certification Exam for surgical techs which many hospitals require for employment.
