Clinical Laboratory Sciences at Colleges in New Jersey

Individuals educated in Clinical Laboratory Sciences are often engaged in detecting medical abnormalities and disease. These technologists examine bodily fluids and tissue for microorganisms, chemical compositions and abnormal cells using microscopes and other specialized equipment.     • Rutgers University offers a bachelor of science degree with a major in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. It is offered in collaboration with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Health Related Professions in Newark (UMDNJ-SHRP). Students complete the first three years of the program at Rutgers University where they engage in general science course work as well as specialized courses in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The fourth year is completed at UMDNJ-SHRP where students may choose to specialize in either cytotechnology or medical laboratory science. Admission to the final year at UMDNJ-SHRP is limited to students with a minimum grade-point average of 2.75 in all courses taken and a minimum grade-point average of 2.0 in all prerequisite courses. Upon completion of this undergraduate degree, students may elect to pursue graduate studies in a related field. (Reference 2)

    New Jersey City University

    • The Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences at New Jersey City University is another program that is offered in collaboration with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Health Related Professions in Newark (UMDNJ-SHRP). Students may choose to specialize in either medical laboratory science or cytotechnology and are encouraged to meet with a program advisor to discuss these options prior to admission. Individuals who pursue medical laboratory science majors generally find employment in a health care setting, whereas Cytotechnologists are often employed in clinical laboratories and teaching institutions.     Ramapo College

    • The School of Theoretical and Applied Science of Ramapo College and the UMDNJ-SHRP jointly offer the Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. A total of 90 preprofessional credits must be acquired through Ramapo College while the remaining 45 professional credits are taken at the UMDNJ-SHRP. Students are expected to achieve a minimum of 16 credits each semester during the first three years of the program, with a minimum of two science courses in each semester. Application to the UMDNJ-SHRP for the final 15 months of the program must be submitted prior to the October 15 deadline of the student's third year. (Reference 4)

    Thomas Edison State College

    • Thomas Edison State College offers a two-year Associate in Science in Applied Science and Technology (ASAST) degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. This program requires 60 credit hours and is limited to individuals previously certified in medical laboratory technology. The program combines a number of required courses, such as Clinical Microbiology and immunohematology while still allowing students to select courses most relevant to their professional interests.     College of Saint Elizabeth

    • The Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science at the College of Saint Elizabeth is also offered in collaboration with UMDNJ-SHRP. Following the completion of three years of study at the College of Saint Elizabeth, students will be able to choose from clinical medical technology, cytotechnology, and toxicology specializations during their final months at UMDNJ-SHRP.
