Nutrition Colleges in New Mexico

Studying nutrition in college leads to a career as a registered dietician or nutritionist. Both of these roles involve work in schools, hospitals, health care centers or private practice. Some nutritionists also choose to do research and teach. New Mexico has three accredited college programs for studying nutrition, dietetics and food science. New Mexico State University, the University of New Mexico and Santa Fe Community College offer a variety of programs, from certificates through graduate-level study.
  1. New Mexico State University

    • The College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers a bachelor of science degree in human nutrition and food science. The college focuses on preparing its graduates for careers in public health, research, microbiology and sports nutrition. Students at NMSU also have an option of majoring in pre-health with a special emphasis on nutrition. This is ideal for students who plan to study medicine, pharmacology or physical therapy at the graduate level. There's also an opportunity to earn a master of science in family and consumer science, with an emphasis in human nutrition.

    University of New Mexico

    • UNM Campus in Albuquerque offers nutrition degrees.

      The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque offers students a bachelor of science in nutrition and dietetics and a master of science in nutrition, both earned through its College of Education. Students also receive placement assistance for the dietetic internship, which is required by most fields in the profession. The school focuses on the role of nutrition in overall health and disease prevention. The faculty aim to create well-rounded nutrition professionals who share a common interest in promoting good health through healthy food choices.

    Santa Fe Community College

    • Santa Fe Community College's nutrition certificate program is aimed at helping those currently employed in the food and nutrition industry stay up-to-date on changing recommendations and requirements within the career sector. Students also gain experience working in the field. The certificate program can help new students obtain entry level positions within the food service and nutrition programs at schools and hospitals. It also makes an applicant more competitive for advanced courses of study at UNM and NMSU.
