Visual & Performing Arts Colleges

Students with an eye towards a career in the visual and performing arts, including theater, fine arts, music and dance, should consider applying to visual and performing arts colleges as opposed to traditional, more academically oriented programs. Colleges of interest to future artists and performers include the Juilliard School, Berklee College of Music, and Maryland Institute College of Art. Arts-oriented students can also consider highly ranked visual and performing arts departments at traditional colleges, such as Stephens College's Theatre department.

    • The Juilliard School caters to and trains exemplary musicians, dancers and actors.

      The Juilliard School is a private performing arts conservatory. Located in New York City's Upper West Side, the school boasts drama, music and dance departments that have nurtured talented and technically proficient artists and performers including Jamie Foxx, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Lar Lubovitch, Sarah Marshall and Marsha Clark. Juilliard admits students on the basis of a highly competitive audition. Other necessary application materials include an essay, letters of recommendation, and proof of high school-level study. A Juilliard student can choose to pursue a Bachelor's degree with a liberal arts component or a shorter, more performance-oriented Diploma in his field of study.

    Berklee College of Music

    • Musicians in search of a cutting-edge music education should choose Berklee College of Music.

      Berklee College of Music, located in Boston, Massachusetts, focuses on providing students with a thorough education in all aspects of the modern music business. The College offers twelve majors, including jazz composition, music production and engineering, songwriting and music therapy. Berklee's application requires an audition and interview and also considers academic qualifications.       Stephens College is a private women's college in Columbia, Missouri.
