Starting in 2010, Murray State University will be one of the first colleges in Kentucky to offer a major in Japanese. The courses will cover Japanese language at all levels, as well as classes on Japanese culture, film and civilization. In addition to majoring, Murray State also allows students to combine their education in Japanese with classes in engineering, communication, business and international affairs. As a result, students can build their own individual programs of study to accomplish their desired academic goals. The university also offers study abroad opportunities to Japan.

To complete the minor, students must also take non-language classes that cover Japanese art, anthropology, geography, philosophy and history. In addition to receiving a minor, students can also receive a teaching certificate in Japanese.
