California State Polytechnic University, Ponoma

• The students at Cal Poly Ponoma can compete in basketball, soccer, track and field, and cross country. The Broncos also have a baseball team for men and a volleyball team for women. The university offers more than 60 majors, and its colleges include agriculture, business administration, education and integrative studies, engineering and environmental design. The campus of Cal Poly Ponoma spans more than 1,400 acres and the school boasts an enrollment of about 21,000 students as of 2010.

University of California, San Diego

• Water polo, track and field, volleyball, tennis, soccer, crew, cross country, fencing, swimming and diving, and basketball are the sports in which both sexes compete at the University of California San Diego. The Tritons also have men’s golf and baseball teams and a women’s softball team. The school enrolled more than 29,000 students in the fall 2009 semester. It offers undergraduate majors in more than two dozen fields, including anthropology, physics, political science, cognitive science, mathematics and literature.

Humboldt State University

• The Jacks field soccer, track and field, cross country and basketball teams. Humboldt State University also has a football team and women’s rowing, softball and volleyball teams. The school offers 49 undergraduate majors housed in three colleges: The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Professional Studies and the College of Natural Resources & Sciences. The school enrolled about 7,800 students in 2010 and boasted a 21-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio.

San Francisco State University

• Both men and women compete in basketball, cross country and soccer at San Francisco State University. The Gators also field men’s teams in baseball and wrestling, while women square off in softball and volleyball. The school enrolled more than 30,000 students in the fall of 2009 on a campus that covers more than 140 acres.
