Education Programs for a Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist in Wisconsin

Mental health clinical nurse specialists are advanced practices nurses focusing on issues related to a patient's mental well-being. Like other advanced practice nurse occupations, a master's or doctorate is required to practice as a clinical nurse specialist. As of 2010, there were five clinical nursing programs in Wisconsin approved by the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. Two are specific to mental health, while others offer related programs for those seeking further advancement.
  1. University of Wisconsin- Madison

    • The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing offers a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a focus on psychiatric-mental health nursing. This program prepares nurses for leadership roles in advanced clinical practice within this specialty area. Full-time or part-time options are available.

      A joint degree program is also offered to those interested in combining nursing and public health.

    • The College of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee also offers a Master of Science in Nursing degree with an option for a psychiatric/mental health focus. The program may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.

      Students participate in a practicum sequence in a clinical setting in addition to classroom study and a research project.
