Located in Grady County, 37 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, the city of Chickasha, Oklahoma, offers those seeking higher education several options in the city and surrounding communities. With a population of 15,850, as of 2010, Chickasha, whose name is derived from the Chocktaw word for "Chickashaw," is home to two colleges in the city, with several university options in the surrounding communities.
  1. The Univsersity of Sciences and Arts of Oklahoma

    • The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) is the only four-year, degree-granting college or university located in the city. According to the events director of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce, it also is the only public, liberal arts school in Oklahoma.

      The university's mission, stated on their website is to, "provide the public with a distinctive and accessible liberal arts and sciences education." The school offers degrees in education and speech language pathology, arts and humanities, business and social science, science and physical education and interdisciplinary studies. As of 2010, just over 1,200 students attend USAO, which was ranked the number one baccalaureate college in the west by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2010.

    Canadian Valley Technical Center

    • Canadian Valley Technical Center (CVTC) is a career and technical education school with campuses in Chickasha, Tuttle, El Reno and Cowan. According to the CVTC website, the school's mission is to "prepare people to succeed through quality career and technical education programs and services."

      The CVTC Chickasha campus offers 15 different full-time programs and more than 70 short-term courses in the fields of computer technology, emergency medical, health, language, trade and industry and special interest. The school also offers continuing education courses for business and industry.

      CVTC provides educational opportunities for high school students, adults, small businesses, large corporations and for university preparation. The focus of the school is on high-tech, math and science education for a variety of fields.

    • The communities around Chickasha also offer degree-seeking students options for colleges and universities. The town, situated approximately 40 minutes by car from the cities of Norman and Oklahoma City, is well placed in between several of the major universities in Oklahoma.

      The most well known University near Chickasha is the University of Oklahoma, located in Norman. The University of Oklahoma--or OU is it is affectionately known to followers of the school--is a much larger public university, well known for its sports programs and strong sense of community.

      The University of Oklahoma grants degrees in more than 150 majors to over 20,000 undergraduate students and 9,000 graduate students. The "Princeton Review" rated the University of Oklahoma number 10 on its list of Best Value Public Universities in 2010.
