Scholarships for Young Black Males

Young black men did not have the same opportunities to pursue a college education as young white men until well into the second half of the 20th century. However, today numerous scholarships and grants are available to help young black men pay tuition, meet other college expenses and give them a head start on a successful career.
  1. United Negro College Fund

    • The United Negro College Fund has been awarding scholarships to young black men since the 1940s. In its decades of existence, the UNCF has given billions of dollars to more than 300,000 young African-Americans so they can afford to go to college. Among the organization's many scholarships is the BASF/Alfred Chisholm Memorial Scholarship Fund. It awards up to $3,000 to any college student who is studying computer science, chemistry, biology or one of many other disciplines and has a minimum GPA of 2.7. The deadline for this annual award is in September. The student must submit recommendations, transcripts and an essay and must attend a predominantly black college.
