Film Media Colleges

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the motion picture and video industries will grow by more than 14 percent from 2008 through 2018. A number of colleges offer programs in film and media arts designed to help students hone their skills and prepare for careers in the industry. These private and public institutions grant both baccalaureate and graduate-level degrees and are often located in centers for film and media, such as Los Angeles, California, and New York City, New York.
  1. University of California Los Angeles

    • A public institution with nearly 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) was established in 1919. The school received the 25th-place ranking among all universities in the United States in the "Best Colleges of 2011" listings published by U.S. News and World Report. The college offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in film, television and digital media. Students apply to the program after completing two years of undergraduate-level general education requirements at UCLA or another accredited, two-year institution. Those accepted to them spend two years completing the major requirements, which include courses in stylistics, cinematography, film editing, directing, digital media and film history. During their senior years, students select one of six areas of specialization to take additional classes in and in which to complete a formal senior project. The specializations are: animation, narrative film production, screenwriting, documentary, digital media and cinema & media studies. All students must also complete a one-semester internship. Graduate-level degrees in film and media are also offered.

    Florida State University

    • Located in Tallahassee, Florida State University is a public institution with a combined enrollment of more than 39,000 undergraduate and graduate students. In its 2011 rankings, "U.S. News and World Report" named the school 106th among all universities in the United States. The university's College of Motion Picture Arts offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts program in production. The school admits only 30 students to the program each year. Prior to graduation, majors must write and direct two short films. At the graduate level, the university awards Master of Fine Arts degrees in production and in writing for the stage and screen. The college also offers the Torchlight Program, which is a non-degree course of study for film students at Florida State or other schools. The program covers business practices and trends related to the film and media industries.

    The New School

    • Situated in New York City, the New School is a private, nonsectarian institution established in 1919. The college received the 139th-place ranking from U.S. News and World Report in the "Best Colleges 2011" ratings. The university offers a Master of Arts degree in media arts with classes typically held during late afternoons, during the evening and on weekends as well as online. Students in the program can specialize in media theory and research, media and the urban environment, media and international affairs, documentaries, social media and social change, media management, film form and practice or sound studies. Internships with production companies and other organizations in New York are available for students in the program.
