New Media Colleges

The bells and whistles, interesting graphics, video and flash banners you see on many websites are created by new media professionals. New Media is present across many sectors including publishing, advertising, journalism and art. New media, as a recognized discipline, is still relatively new and the higher education institutions that offer degrees and certificates in new media vary in content and emphasis. Some universities focus on the technology aspect while others emphasize an artistic approach.
  1. Bachelor of New Media Programs

    • Not many universities have developed a full-fledged bachelor of new media arts degree but a select few do offer the option. University of Illinois at Chicago (uic.edu) offers a program that exposes students to all aspects of design with emphasis on their chosen specialization. New media students at UIC also engage in interdisciplinary projects that combine different aspects of design technologies. The Maine College of Art (meca.edu) students take new media courses that blend art, communication, computer technology, photography and writing. The Rochester Institute of Technology (rit.edu) has two degree options in new media. The new media design and imaging degree focuses on multimedia projects and art while the new media interactive development degree provides a background in computer programming, design and content development.

    Certificate Programs

    • The Berkeley Center for New Media at the University of California, Berkeley (berkeley.edu) offers undergraduate and graduate courses that combine new media disciplines across the arts, history, communications and technology. Graduate students may also earn a graduate certificate in new media that includes exposure to the industry through guest lecturers and special events. The University of Baltimore (ubalt.edu) offers a certificate in new media publishing that focuses on application development, web production and design.The University of Georgia's New Media Institute (uga.edu) offers a certificate in new media that gives students an overview of the mechanics, context, practical application and contemporary environment of new media.

    Associate in New Media Programs

    • Some community colleges offer an associate of arts in new media. Sussex County Community College (sussex.edu) offers a new media communications degree that combines studies from the departments of communications, graphic design and computer information systems. Both LaGuardia Community College (lagcc.cuny.edu) and Queensborough Community College (qcc.cuny.edu) offer an Associate in Applied Science in new media technology. The programs focus on new computer technologies and how they are used for graphic design, art and multimedia production.

    Art and Design Schools

    • Art and design schools offer new media degrees that provide a strong foundation in classic art mediums. Parsons' School of Art, Media and Technology (newschool.edu) offers a design and technology degree that includes computer graphics, data programming, animation and interactive technologies. Rhode Island School of Design (risd.edu) offers a digital plus media master's degree that focuses on using sound, light and computer technology in the creation of multimedia art. Academy of Art University (academyart.edu) has a computer arts degree with courses that focus on up-to-date technology in photography, video, audio and print design.
